Books to read with kids

A facebook friend asked for list of books to read to her littles. Here's what I came up with spur of the moment.

anything by Don and Aubrey woods, Mo Willems has fun stuff(especially the elephant and piggy easy readers), we love Fancy Nancy, anything by Doreen Cronin, Kevin Henkes, Keiko Kasza, and Jon Agee. We also love Starry Safari and the Llama Llama books by Anna Dewdney. The Giant Jam Sandwich, Hand Hand Fingers Thumb, anything by author Mem Fox, Harold and the Purple Crayon . . .

What would you add?

Scaredy Squirrel and the Haunted House

My kids love the Scaredy Squirrel books by Melanie Watt.  A few weeks ago, Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach created Moira's first imaginary friend.  Yesterday, Scaredy Squirrel helped Ellie to draw this picture:

This is Scaredy Squirrel and the Haunted House.  In the picture, Scaredy (he's the one with the very black ears on the left bottom of the page) has to run into the haunted house to become friends with the witch (bottom right hand) who lives with a ghost (top of picture with RARA coming out of her mouth) and a bat (middle of the page--this is a large bat.).  I asked Ellie if, after they become friends, they carve a pumpkin and go trick-or-treating.   She looked at me like I was nuts.

Check out the Scaredy Squirrel books.  They're great, especially for the nervous child.
